Fort Boyard

And so I was introduced to Fort Boyard, apparently THE show to watch over the summer. It's a French series but even popular here in Switzerland, where I live.

I've only watched two episodes so for the purposes of this blogpost, I had to do a bit more research.  Wikipedia tells me that Fort Boyard was first created in 1990 (which makes it seriously old and seriously successful!) and airs year after year. It is always filmed and aired during the summer (for obvious reasons if you know anything about European seasons and weather).

It reminds me of and has elements of tv shows such as: Survivor, Fear Factor, The Mole, Gladiators, and It's a Knockout.

If you're too young you probably won't have heard of It's a Knockout as it's a show I watched during my childhood in the 80s. Surprisingly, a Wikipedia search tells me the show that I watched (Australian version) was based on a British version which first aired in 1966 and that was based on a(nother) French show called Intervilles, created in 1962. Interesting, n'est-ce pas ?

Perhaps I'm seeing a pattern (or rather, a cultural phenomenon) here.... That French people are good at creating and like to watch these wacky tv adventure game shows!

The series is filmed and set on the real Fort Boyard (French link). I created a map (above) to help you get a better idea where it is in France. It is on its own tiny island on the east coast, near the city of La Rochelle. I have been to La Rochelle and Ile de Ré (the larger island to the north of Fort Boyard) and it's just beautiful there.

From what I can tell from the tv series, Fort Boyard  is a beautiful, HUGE old fort (built in 1857), full of nooks and crannies. It is an amazing setting for such a tv show. It seems a bit like the French version of Alcatraz.

The presenter is Olivier Minne

Unlike other game shows (mentioned above) there is only ONE team. Therefore they are not competing against another team and there is none of that nasty backstabbing type stuff that you had with Survivor. The only thing they are racing against is the clock as each challenge has a time limit.

In each team there are 6 people, with 2-4 of each sex.

Apparently, before, they were teams of families or friends but now they all seem to be celebrities who play for a charity of their choice. This is the team I watched last night:

Vincent Mc DOOM, animateur et acteur
Patrick PUYDEBAT, comédien et scénariste
Hélène ROLLES, chanteuse et comédienne
Juliette CHAPPEY, comédienne (Les vacances de Ducobu)
François VIETTE, comédien (Les vacances de Ducobu)
Jade HANDI, organisatrice de voyages aventures et aventurière de Koh-Lanta

(more info on the team here)

I thought they did really well compared to the previous team/episode I watched.

Then you have the characters who help or hinder them:

Le Père Fouras (whom I affectionately like to call "the old dude"). His name is based on a coastal port in the region. He's been played by Yann le Gac since 2003.

Passe-Partout. The English translation of passe-partout is passkey, a skeleton key, or a master key, but the literal translation is "goes everywhere". Thus, he is someone who can go anywhere. He is played by André Bouchet (right in photo).

Passe-Muraille. Someone who can go through walls. Played by Anthony Laborde (left in photo).

(they are both featured in the team photo above, wearing blue and white striped French-style shirts).

Much like any tv series, as time goes on, new characters are created and old characters disappear. Admittedly, I've never watched an entire series and I don't pay attention to every little thing (and to be honest I don't understand everything!) so those are the three main characters IMHO.

If you would like to find out more about the characters since 1990 (and can read French) please check out this awesome Fans de Fort Boyard site here, created by some fans of the show.

You can also go to the Wikipedia link to read about the 3 phases and the challenges as I could not begin to describe everything myself given how little I know about the show. Suffice to say, I do find the show very interesting (and I am someone who never watches tv these days).

You have your:
• dare/phobia type tasks which usually involve: heights, depths (water), insects and reptiles, and darkness.
• physical endurance/strength/skill/balance type tasks
• and those mentally challenging tasks, brain teasers, etc.

In that aspect, the show ALSO reminds me of The Amazing Race.

I really like that even though these people are celebrities, they are not arrogant or annoying and attention-seeking like you get on many of the above-mentioned tv game shows. They really come together and cheer each other on and it's great to see the team spirit. I was particularly impressed by the two kids (Juliette and François) last night who had to do balancing act where they were each standing on a tightrope many metres above the ground and had to face each other and walk across it in a synchronized fashion. There were were also funny moments where Vincent (who I assume is a guy, but who dressed in the girls' uniform and acted like a girl) was screaming when the giant bugs fell on him (her) during one of the tasks.. Gosh it was so funny.

Another thing I like about the show is that the whole thing is over by the end of each episode. None of this waiting weeks or months to find out who the winner is at the end. Also, I watched it on the France 2 channel and there were no ads at all - bonus!

All I can say is, if you get the opportunity to watch this, do it! It's good wholesome family fun, perfect for any age and any kind of tv viewer (even those who never watch tv, like me)! :)

Here is a teaser of last night's episode:

20°C in Chamonix and random stuff

It was yet another beautiful day yesterday so I decided to go for a walk... Then I realised that it had been so long since I'd done any proper exercise that I decided to jog for a bit. It had also been a while since I took photos in my vicinity so I did all 3. It was so unbelievably warm I was sweating like crazy with only 2 layers of clothes (thin long sleeve top and thin sweater) and jeans on. It was t-shirt weather!

Then last night I heard it was 19° in Chamonix and today it's 20° :( which means... no snow...

Overall I'm in quite a good mood because the weather is just gorgeous. Like I said before, it is sunny almost every day in my town and it's pretty consistent and very rarely windy or rainy. For that reason I actually prefer it over the weather in Sydney. The weather in Australia is so inconsistent you'd be lucky to get 2 days in a row with the same weather!

Last night I watched 2 back-to-back episodes of the Simpsons and then normally I go back to my room to veg, surf the net, organise my photos, or prepare for the following day. But last night I decided to stay and watch... Top Chef (France) !! Now I have never seen the US version and we don't get it in Australia but it's very similar to Masterchef. It was hard to stay focused because it went for over 2 hours but I thoroughly enjoyed it. I have never watched tv for that long since I came to France (7:30-11pm!) The creative/artistic techniques they used just blew me away.

This is so bizarre.. but all of a sudden, I am popular? When I first came here I was crying in my room because I knew nobody and had nobody to talk to or do stuff with and now people are actively seeking me out in person, or through notes or text messages to talk to me, to show me something, to tell me something or to ask me something or to simply hang out with me! I can't believe it :) I'm specifically talking about my 4 closest friends - M, K, Y and the Italian assistant C but it's just the general vibe I get... It's such a nice feeling because when I was in high school or university I was NEVER popular and it was always ME who had to go in search of others...

What else?

I've been told that some teachers are going to strike on Thursday due to some reform where the  government is cost cutting and people will lose shifts/jobs etc...

We had Chinese food in the school cantine today in honour of Chinese New Year! Unfortunately it wasn't that great but I'm still happy as the whole canteen was decked out in beautiful colourful decorations and the staff made a real effort.

Masterchef Australia in Paris

This was one of the really really overdue posts I was going to write. I wish I had written up one in draft mode earlier but now that the show is over I think I've forgotten some of the things I had wanted to write but here goes anyway:

Masterchef Australia

The highest rating non-sports tv show in Australia!

This year was the second year and second season. I started watching it last year not knowing what to expect. I had no idea I'd come to enjoy it so much! Fact 1: I LOVE reality tv shows but these days Fact 2: I hardly ever watch tv. However I became addicted to Masterchef.

Last year I was just coming out of a rough patch in my life and watching Masterchef every night (except Saturday nights) just made me so happy and excited. But most of all, because of Masterchef I actually started to find my OWN passion again. Watching these people who are SO passionate about something (in this case cooking), I felt, was a bit infectious. All these people who had given up their (mostly) successful careers and life to come on this show. I heard some days they were shooting 12-15 hours a day so it would have been absolutely exhausting!

It was because of this show that I started to think about myself and my life. I mean really think. I don't think it was Masterchef which caused me to start learning French but it may have influenced me subconsciously with all this yummy-sounding French food words!

Prior to watching MC I not only had no idea about cooking in general (always hated it!) but also no idea about French cooking. Now, after watching 2 seasons of the show (each about 4 months in length) I finally for the first time in my life appreciate food, ingredients, and cooking. Not to say that I will ever like cooking that much nor be that good at it, but I definitely appreciate the work that goes into a fine meal!

The hosts and the contestants

Why else did I like the show, and what made the show so special and popular? It was definitely the wonderfully picked hosts and contestants! I love the hosts. I have met both George Calombaris and Gary Mehigan twice, and Matt Preston once. They are great chefs of course but they are very good at talking at the camera and explaining things well. They are funny and entertaining to watch and get along great with each other! What more could you ask for?

The contestants are largely well picked and well liked. Like all other reality TV shows they had to choose the final 24 from thousands, and then whittle that down until there were 10, and then just 2. I think most people agreed that the 2 finalists - Adam Liaw and Callum Hann - were both extremely likeable guys, friendly, nice, not egotistical but most of all - extremely talented!

In the end Adam won and I was happy with that result.

Now onto Paris! I was sooooooooooo excited when I found out they were going to London and then to Paris. They met many big name chefs like Heston Blumenthal and Jamie Oliver in London and competed in an "Amazing Race" (another reality tv show for those that don't know) style challenge around Paris to first find the ingredients from various stores and markets then make their way (in teams of 2) to the banks of the Seine for the big cook off!

I was like a giddy little kid high on sweets. I simply ate up those Paris (and London) episodes. Apart from those trips they also went to Melbourne and Canberra and had lots of interesting cooking tasks like cooking for the army and for business class on Qantas.

Unfortunately by now I've forgotten a lot of things I wanted to say about the show... for me personally though, I can see what it was so popular. It appeals to both sexes, all ages and cultural backgrounds. And speaking of culture, the contestants well and truly showed the multicultural nature of the Australian population (as opposed to other tv shows like Big Brother which only had white contestants). It showed just how talented Australians are in the area of cooking. It showed that you can achieve anything if you put your mind to it!

During the final episode of Masterchef, it took out at least 5 of the top 10 trending topics on Twitter (#Masterchef, #Junior Masterchef, #Callum were some of the hashtags I remember) which is pretty amazing when you consider how small Australia's population is!

I'm sure I originally had a lot more to say but this post is already way overdue.

I admit I am/was a complete Masterchef addict.

I can't wait for the upcoming series: Junior Masterchef featuring amateur cooks who are only 8-12 years old!

Edited to add (24 Aug 2010): There will soon be a French version of Masterchef! Woohoo!

Un gars une fille à Hong Kong

Un gars une fille à Hong Kong

This turned up in my YouTube homepage (which suggests videos I might like based on what I've watched in the past) and I immediately loaded up all 5 videos and watched it. I've been to Hong Kong about 12 times and each time it's a new and different experience (because of my different ages, who I go with, which season it is, what I see/do etc etc). I never tire of going there. The airport is amazing, the shopping and food are wonderful. It's such a fun place to visit!

I am so happy that now I can understand almost all of the video/s. Before, when I first started watching Un Gars Une Fille on Youtube I could hardly understand anything and felt that they were speaking too quickly (and too colloquially).

Now that I can understand nearly all of it it makes it so much more enjoyable to watch!

The two characters are so hilarious to watch and I love how they act a bit child-like and naïve sometimes... er often!

When I tell my French friends I listen to Kyo and watch Un Gars Une Fille I always get the same response: "But they are old !" Ha. I don't care though, I love them and will continue to listen to and watch them!

Eurovision Oslo 2010 - Germany wins

EuroVision 2010 Song Contest

On Friday night I was watching my favourite Australian tv show at the moment, Masterchef. Actually favourite is probably the wrong word to use as it's the ONLY tv show I watch.

Out of the blue I get a call from my mother telling me to, "Quick! Turn to channel SBS" (SBS is the channel that screens international news, programs and movies) and I was like, "Why?" She was working herself up into a big excitement... "Oh there's a really good show about singers from Europe"...

I only changed the channel after Masterchef finished because, well, in Australia at least, Eurovision is considered to be very very erm daggy. It's almost a farce it's so hilariously silly with the bad outfits, dancing and backdrops. I'm not sure if it's intentional or what or that Europeans appreciate different things to Anglophones ;)

Still, I did watch a bit of it. I find it a bit boring actually as I hate waiting for the results. The most exciting part for me was hearing the female host speak French ;)

Well anyway, Germany won by a long shot. Congrats to Lena for her song "Satellite"!

(I can't help but think that Lena has a strange British-Australian accent when she sings in English)

Un gars et une fille prennent des cours de langues

I wrote about this show Un Gars, une fille before.. but I just found this hilarious episode where they learn English and Spanish! Warning: profanity ahead.

Un gars, une fille dans Disneyland

I found this French sitcom called "Un gars, une fille" (A guy, a girl) on YouTube. I really like it because it's short (the episodes are only 6 minutes long) and I can generally get the gist of it because of their body language. The topics they talk about are interesting too, and highlight the (often hilarious) differences between men and women!

This is not the best or funniest episode but is quite sweet, and filmed in Paris Disneyland or is it Euro Disney?
